JNU Students and Faculty Denounces Meeting of Academic Council on EWS

The Students Union of JNU and Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) opposed the emergency meeting called by Academic Council.

The Students Union of JNU and Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) opposed the emergency meeting called by Academic Council to discuss implementation of 10 percent reservation for the economically weaker sections (EWS).

The JNU administration had scheduled an emergency meeting at Convention Centre on 3 pm to adopt the Government of India’s policy on reservation for economically weaker sections. AC had organised this meeting to speed up the implementation of the government’s notice and to tell both the bodies that there was no scope of amendment or modification.

Both the democratically elected bodies of the JNU accused the administration of not respecting the university’s statutes and acts. According to the statements disseminated by both the bodies, the meeting was later conducted at 5.00 pm through an email sent at 4:45 pm.

JNUTA secretary Avinash Kumar and president Atul Sood said in a statement, “Instead of rescheduling the meeting to a later date, as asked for by many members, and instead calling an AC meeting at a 15-minute notice, the JNU administration has once again revealed its utter contempt for all that makes a university.”
